Whether HDD is on compatibility list or not Synology would not compensate you on an data loss. So there is no need to buy their overpriced HDDs. Just buy HDDs from regular providers like Toshiba - these are quality HDDs at reasonable price. And for that annoying "not compatible" messaging from DSM just hack their disk compatibility DB in DSM's installation. There are ways to do so described in forums.

Do you offer your clients a DSM-access via Internet? What would be a more secure solution? Personally I use VPN, but a quick access for a customer via DSM-Acount would be cool also, e.g. for sharing stuff.

This is a good overview of the facts, but SpaceRex's commentary isn't very good advice. 1) You should start off with a solid idea of how much space you need & many people shouldn't be wasting $ buying features, like extra bays, for the future. All of this will get much cheaper in the future, and the cost difference is too significant to justify buying a lot more than you need. Take the time to calculate a generous, but realistic, estimate of your storage need. Remember that whatever the total size is of your non-redundant volume, you'll need to buy another hard drive that size to do occasional backups of that portion. Do not rely only a mirrored RAID for anything important. If you have four 10tb drives in a mirrored RAID 1, you'll need to buy a separate 20tb backup solution too- or else a fire, electrical spike or burglary could leave you with nothing. 2) Also, many people probably do not need 4 bays. With the 1Gb ethernet limiting RAID speed advantages, the main reasons for multiple bays is redundancy and max storage capacity. People who do professional media projects may also find it useful to keep empty bays for unexpected/irregular expansion, but mostly the number of bays you need comes down to a) how many Tbs do you need? AND b) what is the cheapest way to achieve a volume that size. Generally speaking, you will want as few drives as possible, because buying two 8tb drives is much cheaper than four 4tb drives and you can easily find hdds over 10tb. Again, don't buy too much more space than you calculate needing, because you'll have to buy larger HDs to back up your system too. Do not think about what you might need in 3 years; all of this will be much cheaper when you need to expand in a few years. 3) Do not pay that much extra for a unit with more RAM on the units that let you add RAM yourself. Those price jumps are for people who don't realize how cheap it is to upgrade their own RAM. Some of the cheapest units have the RAM soldered in, so you can't add more. If you're doing anything RAM intensive, just avoid the cheapest ones or 'google' using that model for the purpose you have in mind so you know whether it will be fast enough for you.

I have a client that has a new Synology NAS DS923+ with 38GBs, or 61,107 files and 28,700 folders. The Synology drive client does not keep users sync correctly. Is this because to many files and folders or how I configured everything? They would like to use the Synology drive client but its just not keeping up and seems to be operating slowly. Thoughts?

soooo... have you thought about making a video to undo the top 6 mistakes if someone got their first NAS about a year ago and made some or all of these (hypothetically *cough* *cough*)

So if multiple NAS health check software is saying after 3 years it needs to be replaced is it not possible that this is just some kind of standard practice to ensure you don't have a critical failure? Like the practice always existed they just started notifying consumers of it so they dont run their drives until failure. If synology had a 5 year notice and WD had a 3 year notice it would be more fishy, but if they all adhere to that same standard 3 years maybe consumers are just unaware of some enterprise maintenance standards

Hi, I am trying to find the answer... If I encrypt a Volume does it mean that I will not be able to open this Disc and the Volume on a different Synology if mine fails? I also do not know how to check if my existing Volume is encrypted (I cannot remember what I set up).

Anothrer great video. I have been strugling to connect it over OpenVPN, it will not connect. I have been using Robocopy over that VPN vor years and work remote over that connevtion. Is there a solution for that?

I think it's fair to say after the past few years of utter anti-customer rubbish from Synology that Computex finally served to announce to the public what Synology actually thinks about Prosumer/Consumer/SMB users and customers ....they are getting out of the market to chase Enterprise shadows where they are going to find out all about real competition. Only DSM keeps them relevant and they will screw that up soon too ... if you literally (like me) use a NAS for network attached storage DSM has zero advantages over anything else ..... My replacement for the DS1821+ as a frontline NAS will be the new Lockstor Gen3 10 bay and the DS will move to backup duty. Synology have lost me ....

So I’m guessing you can use your nas to wake up other devices on your lan? Can you send a ssh command to the nas for it to do this?

Christ, if setting up things like reverse IP, SPF, DKIM and DMARC are the only reason *not* to set up your own mail server, then I'd say *go ahead and build your own mail server* ! Do I need to consider anything regarding snapshots when backing up entire directories with visible #Snapshot-Folders externally using Hyper Backup? I don't want the snapshot files to be backed up additionally!

Core dead? No. It's jails or "Apps" are. Its still the best option for redundancy.

I had switched to this after my office time machine SSD ran full... Backup speed was nice, but I had to uninstall it just 4-5 days later because it completely fried all disk access, to the point that even its own uninstaller didn't work.
